В 1854 осуществил публичное сожжение текстов Закона о беглых рабах [ Fugitive Slave Act of 1850] и Конституции. Был пацифистом, но перед Гражданской войной [ Civil War] пересмотрел свои взгляды и горячо поддерживал Армию северян. После войны активно выступал за права женщин и индейцев, хотя и не пользовался прежней популярностью. Л. Н.
